Farmers in plight as wholesale markets refuse to buy produce
1:49 Ludhiana, October 13 (ANI): Farmers in Punjab, regarded as the green bowl of India, are an angry lot as they apprehend huge losses due to rotting of their paddy harvest. The wholesale traders in Ludhiana district have refused to buy the paddy from the farmers by contending the produce contains excessive moisture and further asked the farmers to dry the paddy in the open.As such the farmers have been compelled to wait for nearly two to four days at a stretch to let their produce dry for the wholesale traders to buy.Further the granaries at the wholesale markets including those managed by the government have said that there is shortage of space to store the paddy and winnowed rice. All these developments have added to the woes of farmers since the monsoon this year witnessed the swollen rivers in Punjab inundating a major part of the agricultural fields with standing crops.
