Islamabad claims that floods have affected over 20 million people, washed away standing crops and livestock worth billions of dollars, damaged schools, hospitals and infrastructure. Waterborne diseases like cholera, diaorrhea and dysentery are already spreading among millions staying in relief camps or under the open sky. The worst hit regions include Balochistan, Gilgilt Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. 3 security men injured in fierce gun battle with Maoists

Bihar, August 30 (ANI): At least three security personnel were injured in the fierce gun battle between the Maoists and security forces in forests near Lakhisarai district of Bihar on Sunday. The encounter started after ultras fired at search parties of security forces who were in the region to bust a Maoist hideout. A joint operation of Bihar Military Police, State Auxiliary Police (SAP) and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force was launched after a tip off about a possible Maoist hideout in the hills of Seetikorani region in the district. Unconfirmed reports suggest that 17 security personnel are missing after the attack. According to police officials, reinforcements have been rushed to the spot.

Maoist ambush kills five jawans in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh, August 30 (ANI): Five security personnel, including three BSF troopers, were killed in an ambush laid by Maoists, followed by a brief gun battle in Kanker region of Chhattisgarh on Sunday. About hundred armed Maoists attacked a search operation team in the forests near Bhuski village in the district. The attack took place in the morning when a team of district police and BSF personnel were conducting a routine search operation. Confirming the number of casualties, Vivekananda Sinha, spokesperson of Chhattisgarh Police said that even Maoists died in attack. The Maoists have spread into the rural pockets of 20 of India's 28 states. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has termed Maoists as the country's biggest internal security threat.

Yechury for all parties in Gorkhaland talks

Darjeeling, August 30 (ANI): CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Sunday said all political parties from the Darjeeling should be invited to the next round of talks on the interim set-up for the region and promised to raise the issue in Parliament. Tripartite meeting between the central government, provincial government and the leaders of the mainstream Gorkha groups is scheduled for September 7, 2010. The earlier 'political-level' talks were held in New Delhi on July 24. The Gorkhaland movement that began in the 1980s had ended with a truce between the then-leader Subhash Ghising and New Delhi after he accepted limited autonomy in 1988 with a new Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC).

Hizbul Mujaheedin militant surrenders in Jammu and Kashmir

Poonch, August 29 (ANI): Liaqat Hussain, a member of militant outfit Hizbul Mujaheedin, surrendered in the presence of his wife in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. During the year 1999 the militant crossed the border via Copera post towards Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) to become a militant and joined Hizbul camp. The militant along with his family including three children was apprehended on Kireni border while crossing towards India.
