Police went door-to-door in midnight swoops as they searched for Tibetans who participated in the protests that flared up in March. Days of monk-led marches in Lhasa devolved into a citywide riot on March 14 that saw Chinese shops thrashed and burned and cars overturned.

The market almost sank to its lowest close in almost three years in the previous session, but gains in international market brought buyers back to the market. The main 30-share Bombay Stock Exchange index ended up 5.86 percent after having risen as much as 6.4 percent in the early trade. All the index's stocks ended higher.

He will visit Haridwar and Rishikesh on April 3 and April 4, for a series of programmes being organised by Parmarth Niketan, an ashram in Rishikesh, as a part of the ongoing Maha Kumbh mela. Speaking to reporters before his departure, Lama added, that when he had participated in the Maha Kumbh mela, almost 40 years back, there were some protests from some Buddhist groups. But now they have realised his commitment.

Gir officials prepare for lion census in Gujarat

Rajkot, April 10(ANI): Preparation for conducting a comprehensive and methodological lion census are in full swing at the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajkot.A team comprising more than 1600 people, including forest officials, regional officers, zonal officers, enumerators and volunteers, will conduct the census at the national park from 24 April.According to Sandeep Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary preparations for the census are on for the last nine months and the lions are being closely monitored in their natural habitat.Kumar said that the forest officials are expecting an increase in the lion population as recorded in the previous census. During the 2005 census, 359 lions were found in Gir.

Massive fire engulfs Indian village

Solang, November 26 (ANI): A major fire engulfed Solang village near hill resort Manali in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday. The fire which started due to a faulty electric wiring, soon spread and gutted around 25 houses which being old and made of wood burnt rapidly. The locals tried to control the fire themselves by dousing it with water before the administration could come to their aid. Three fire brigades were involved in the fire fighting operations to control the raging fire.
