While the bandh supporters disrupted rail and road transport services, nearly 166 of them were arrested for putting up road blockades in many areas.

Srinagar, April 09 (ANI): Separatists gave a shutdown call in Kashmir today to protest the killing of Moulvi Showkat Shah, the moderate religious leader who denounced the violence that rocked the valley and agreed to engage in dialogue with interlocutors last year. Moulvi was killed in a bomb blast near a mosque in Srinagar on Friday. Both Hardline and moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference along with JKLF (Jammu Kahsmir Liberation Front) have given the shutdown call that left the streets of Srinagar deserted and shops, schools and offices closed amid tension and fear. Meanwhile, authorities have mobilised and deployed hundreds of armed security personnel to patrol the area. Locals urged the government to take action and bring the culprits to book at the earliest.

Jiabao is expected to visit India around mid December and then proceed to Pakistan. India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao at a seminar on Sino-Indian relations said that Chinese role in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and its nuclear programme were some of the issues that weighed on New Delhi's relationship with Beijing. Rao pressed for greater respect for India's sensitivities and raised the issue of stapled visas given by China to Indian citizens from the restive Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir, March 05 (ANI): An army officer and four militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a 30-hour long fierce gun battle in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Thursday in the second major operation in eight days. The firefight with militants holed up in a cluster of houses connected by tunnels had broken out at Dadsara village on Wednesday morning. Bodies of the four gunmen were recovered after the siege conducted by the joint forces of the elite Special Forces 'Rashtriya Rifles' and the state police.

7 days NIA custody for DHD militant Niranjan Hojai

Guwahati, July 06 (ANI): A special designated court at Guwahati on Monday granted 7-days remand of Niranjan Hojai commander-in-chief of a banned militant outfit Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) (DHD-J) to National Investigation Agency (NIA). Hojai was arrested by the Nepal Police from an airport near Kathmandu and handed him over to NIA on July 03. NIA is probing the misappropriation of public funds in the newly named Dima Hasao district in Assam. According to media reports, Hojai fled with million of rupees from the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council to buy arms for his organisation.
