Maoist rebels launched a barrage of gunfire on the boat in Malkangiri district of Orissa. The four decade old Maoist rebellion has killed thousands of people, as the biggest threat to the country's internal security.

IOA invites Rahul Gandhi to carry Olympic torch

New Delhi, April 09(ANI): The Indian Olympic Association has invited Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to carry the Olympic torch during its relay in Delhi on April 17. IOA President Suresh Kalmadi has also invited a number of young MPs, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada and Sachin Pilot. Fearing trouble from Tibetan protestors, the IOA has already shortened the route of the Olympic torch relay. The original 8-9 km run from Red Fort to India Gate has been shortened to 2-3 km.

Independent poll panel said that at least 63 to 65 percent voting took place in the 11 districts spread across 95 constituencies amid tight security. In spite of the tight security, clashes broke out between BJP and Congress workers at Himatnagar constituency in central Gujarat. Two political activists were injured in the violence.

The communist-run state is holding an election for the running of the network of village councils. There are 20 seats under Basanti village council and all seats belong to the CPI (M).In another incident, violence also erupted in Howrah district, killing one person in Domjur region of the district.
