Zubin Mehta gets Walk of Fame star

Los Angeles, March 2 (ANI): Internationally acclaimed music conductor of Indian origin Zubin Mehta was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, to celebrate 50 years of his career. He is best remembered in California for his stint as the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1962-1978. He was the music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 1961-67 and held the same post with the New York Philharmonic from 1978-1991, longer than anyone else has ever held the position.

557 Indians evacuated from Libya

New Delhi, March 01 (ANI): A total of 557 Indians stranded in strife-torn Libya returned home in two batches by two Air India flights in the early morning on Tuesday, taking the total number of people evacuated so far by the four Air India special flights to 1,083. The fourth Air India flight landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi at around 4.30 am, bringing 331 passengers. While narrating his experience, one of the evacuees said, they were beaten up by army personnel who believed them to be mercenaries.

New Delhi, March 01 (ANI): The Supreme Court today ruled out the Calcutta High Court order of registration of a murder case against industrialist Ashok Kumar Todi and some police officers in the death case of Rizwanur Rehman. However, it upheld the earlier orders of the High Court for a probe against the accused by the CBI under section 306 IPC (abetment of suicide). Rizwanur, who wedded Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka, was found dead on the rail tracks in a month after the marriage.

11 convicts in Godhra case awarded death sentence

Ahmedabad, March 01 (ANI): Eleven out of thirty one convicts in the Godhra train burning case were given death sentence by a special Court today. Rest 20 were awarded life sentence in the 2002 case that left 59 Karsevaks dead and triggered riots in Gujarat. Special judge PR Patel, considering the case of 11 convicts as 'rarest of rare', pronounced death for them, while the prosecution had sought the death sentence for all the convicts. Court also passed separate sentences for different offences like looting, firing. The accused have been fined as well.
